Pure Shilajit: How to Identify Authentic vs Fake Products

If a sample fails three or more of these, throw it out. If it passes the first four cleanly, you are probably holding real resin. The flame test is the single most useful one because almost no common adulterant fails to burn, while authentic shilajit simply will not.
What to Demand in a Certificate of Analysis
A real COA is dated, lists the lab, identifies the lot it tested, and reports actual numbers. Pass-fail summaries are useless. The line items that matter:
- Lead (Pb): under 1.0 ppm. California Prop 65 limits oral lead exposure to 0.5 micrograms per day, so do the math against your dose.
- Arsenic (As): under 1.5 ppm, ideally inorganic-As speciated.
- Mercury (Hg) and Cadmium (Cd): each under 0.1 ppm.
- Total fulvic acid: 15 percent minimum by ASTM E1915 or equivalent.

- Microbiology: total plate count under 10,000 CFU/g, no E. coli, no salmonella.
- Pesticides and aflatoxins: aflatoxin B1 under 5 ppb.
A brand that publishes only "tested for purity" with no numbers is hiding numbers it does not want you to see. - Cures-cancer language, testosterone numbers without a citation, or "ancient secret" copy.
- Brand-new seller account with one product, all five-star reviews, posted in a one-week window.
- Packaging without batch number, manufacturing date, or lot code.
- No physical company address or returns policy.
If a product trips two or more, do not buy. If it trips one, ask the seller to address it before you spend money.
How to Test What You Already Bought
You already have the seven-test protocol above. Run it the day your jar arrives, while the return window is still open. Real-world workflow:
- Smell the jar before opening fully. Earthy, slightly smoky, faintly bitter.
- Take out a piece roughly 100mg. Roll between fingers, observe softening time.
- Drop into 50ml warm water, set a timer.
- Refrigerate a 100mg piece for two hours, snap it.
- Burn a tiny crumb on foil with a lighter. Smoke yes, sustained flame no.
- Taste a rice-grain amount. Bitter, mineral. Spit if you want.

What Counterfeits Actually Do to You
